Look at all the living things around you. A sparrow. A mango tree. A cockroach. A whale. A mushroom. These are vastly different organisms, yet they all share a common origin. They all descended, with modification, from simpler ancestral forms.

Evolution is the process by which species change over time. Small changes accumulate across generations. Over millions of years, these changes can produce entirely new species. Evolution explains the diversity of life on Earth.

For NDA, evolution is a precision chapter. Questions concentrate on a small, specific set: the vertebrate hierarchy, the bat-as-mammal and turtle-as-reptile identification, the Archaeopteryx fossil, ear muscles as vestigial organs, and the homologous vs analogous distinction. Every section below marks exactly where exam questions originate.

1. What is Evolution?

Evolution is the process by which heritable characteristics of biological populations change across successive generations. These changes arise from natural processes, particularly natural selection, operating on the genetic variation that exists in every population.

Evolution does not happen to individuals. It happens to populations over many generations. Individual organisms do not evolve during their lifetimes. It is the population that changes as advantageous traits become more common over time.

2. The Vertebrate Evolutionary Hierarchy

The most tested evolution fact in NDA is this sequence: how do the vertebrate classes rank in terms of evolutionary advancement? The sequence from most primitive to most advanced:

Fish  →  Amphibians  →  Reptiles  →  Birds  →  Mammals

This hierarchy reflects the order in which these classes evolved over geological time. Fish evolved first. Mammals evolved most recently and are considered the most advanced. They have the most complex physiological systems: endothermy (warm-bloodedness), live birth (mostly), lactation, and complex brains.

3. Application: Most Advanced and Most Primitive

The vertebrate hierarchy is applied in a specific way in NDA questions. A mixed list of animals from different classes is presented. The student must identify the most advanced (mammals rank highest) or most primitive (fish/amphibians rank lowest) among them.

Bat is the correct answer because it is the only mammal. Mammals rank above birds in evolutionary advancement. A bat has wings, but its wings are made of skin membrane; it gives birth to live young, nurses with milk, and is warm-blooded. It is unmistakably a mammal.  [NDA 2007-II]

Turtle is the correct answer because it is the only reptile among the options. Reptiles evolved before mammals. They belong to an evolutionarily older lineage. Dolphins, otters, and walruses are all aquatic or semi-aquatic mammals. Being in water does not make them less advanced.  [NDA 2008-I]

IMPORTANT Both NDA 2007 and NDA 2008 test the same underlying hierarchy: Fish → Amphibians → Reptiles → Birds → Mammals The most primitive class = the one that evolved earliest in geological time. The most advanced class = the one that evolved most recently (mammals). An animal’s habitat (aquatic, aerial) does NOT determine its evolutionary rank. Its class does.

4. Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection

Charles Darwin proposed the theory of natural selection, the mechanism by which evolution occurs. Darwin’s core insight: in every generation, more individuals are born than can survive. Not all survive equally. Individuals with certain traits are better suited to their environment. They survive longer, reproduce more, and pass on their advantageous traits to offspring. Over generations, the population changes, becoming better adapted.

This is natural selection, often called “survival of the fittest.”

“Fittest” Does NOT Mean Strongest

“Fittest” means best adapted to the current environment, not physically strongest or largest. A cactus is fitter than an oak tree in a desert, not because it is stronger, but because it is better suited to dry conditions. A tiny bacterium can be fitter than a large mammal in certain conditions.

Four Conditions for Natural Selection

5. Lamarck vs Darwin

Before Darwin, Jean-Baptiste Lamarck proposed a different mechanism for evolutionary change, the inheritance of acquired characteristics. He believed that traits an organism develops during its lifetime can be passed to its offspring.

Darwin’s natural selection replaced Lamarck’s theory as the accepted explanation for evolution. The key reason Lamarck is wrong: genetic changes in DNA must occur for traits to be inherited. Physical changes to the body during a lifetime do not alter the DNA. Only DNA changes are passed to offspring.

6. Natural Selection vs Artificial Selection

Both produce change over generations, but one is directed by nature, the other by deliberate human choice. Artificial selection is essentially accelerated evolution guided by human preferences rather than environmental pressures.

7. Evidence of Evolution

Multiple independent lines of evidence support evolution. Each provides a different window into the evolutionary process.

8. Fossil Evidence: Archaeopteryx

Archaeopteryx is one of the most celebrated transitional fossils in science. It provides direct evidence that birds evolved from reptiles.

Archaeopteryx had a unique mosaic of features from two different classes:

This mosaic of reptile and bird features in one animal is direct fossil evidence of the evolutionary link between the two groups. Archaeopteryx provides evidence that birds evolved from reptiles, NOT mammals from reptiles, NOT reptiles from amphibians, NOT birds from mammals. The bird-reptile link is its specific and unambiguous contribution.

9. Vestigial Organs in Humans

Vestigial organs are structures present in an organism that have lost most or all of their original function through evolution. They are evolutionary remnants, structures that were functional in ancestral forms but are no longer needed or used.

Ear muscles in humans are the classic vestigial organ. In many mammals, dogs, horses, cats, ear muscles actively rotate the ears to locate sounds. In humans, these muscles still exist but are essentially non-functional in most people.

The jaw apparatus, canine teeth, and humerus are all functionally active structures. They are NOT vestigial.

Any of these vestigial structures could appear in future exam questions. The key principle is the same: present in the body but no longer functional for its original ancestral purpose.

10. Homologous and Analogous Structures

Homologous Structures

Homologous structures have the same basic structural plan, the same bones, and the same developmental origin, but are used for different functions in different species. They indicate common ancestry. These species all inherited the same basic structure from a shared evolutionary ancestor.

The classic example is the vertebrate forelimb: the human arm, bat wing, whale flipper, and horse’s front leg all share the same underlying bone arrangement: humerus, radius, ulna, carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges. But they are used for completely different purposes: grasping, flying, swimming, and walking.

Analogous Structures

Analogous structures perform the same function but have completely different structural origins. They indicate convergent evolution: unrelated species independently evolved similar solutions to the same environmental challenge.

The classic example is wings: the wing of a bird and the wing of an insect both enable flight, the same function. But a bird’s wing is a modified vertebrate forelimb. An insect’s wing is a completely different structure with no bones or shared developmental origin.

11. Molecular Evidence

Modern biology can compare DNA sequences and protein structures between species. Closely related species, those that shared a common ancestor more recently, have very similar DNA sequences. Distantly related species have more differences in their DNA.

This molecular evidence independently confirms the evolutionary relationships suggested by anatomy and fossil evidence. Human and chimpanzee DNA is approximately 98% similar, reflecting their relatively recent common ancestry. Human and bacterial DNA is far less similar, reflecting the enormous evolutionary distance between these lineages.

12. Human Evolution: Brief Overview

Humans evolved gradually from earlier primate ancestors through a series of intermediate forms. The key stages of human evolution:

This sequence has not yet been directly tested in the NDA at this level of detail, but the progression from simpler to more complex forms is the underlying evolutionary principle that runs through the entire chapter.
