Animal Kingdom & Classification – NDA Biology Notes

There are millions of animal species on Earth. To study them, scientists need a system. Classification is the system that groups living things based on shared characteristics and reveals evolutionary relationships. Animals grouped together are often related by descent from a common ancestor. The science of classification is called taxonomy.

For NDA, animal classification is one of the most reliably tested topics in biology. Questions come from the taxonomic hierarchy, arthropod leg counts, the true-fish distinction, vertebrate heart chambers, the warm- versus cold-blooded split, and specific confusions involving marine mammals, bats, and the crocodile exception. Each section below is keyed to the source of exam questions.

1. What is Classification?

Classification groups living things based on shared characteristics. A good classification system also reflects evolutionary relationships. Animals in the same group are typically related by descent from a common ancestor.

The science of classification is called taxonomy. Carl Linnaeus developed the binomial nomenclature system, the two-part Latin naming system in which every species receives a genus name and a species name. Bentham and Hooker are associated with using embryological characters in taxonomy, employing the development of embryos to understand evolutionary relationships.  [NDA 2019-II]

2. The Taxonomic Hierarchy

Every animal belongs to a series of increasingly specific groups. The hierarchy runs from the broadest to the most specific:

Kingdom → Phylum → Class → Order → Family → Genus → Species

The sub-sequence tested most often begins at Phylum: Phylum → Class → Order → Family → Genus → Species.  [NDA 2018-I]

The most commonly swapped pair is Order and Family. Order always comes before Family. A sequence placing Family before Order is always incorrect.

IMPORTANT Mnemonic: Please Come Over for Good Soup Phylum → Class → Order → Family → Genus → Species ORDER always comes BEFORE FAMILY. This is the most swapped pair in hierarchy questions.  [NDA 2018-I]

4. Arthropoda: The Largest Phylum

Arthropoda is the largest phylum in the Animal Kingdom, containing more described species than all other animal phyla combined.  [NDA 2006-II | NDA 2014-II] Within Arthropoda, insects are the most species-rich class. More insect species have been identified than all fungi, green plants, or bacteria combined.

Arthropoda is characterised by jointed legs, a segmented body, and a hard exoskeleton made of chitin. Jointed legs are the definitive diagnostic feature distinguishing arthropods from other invertebrates such as earthworms.

Insect bite itching is caused by formic acid injected into the skin, not acetic acid, not lactic acid, not maleic acid.

Arthropod Classes: Leg-Count Identification

This table resolves all arthropod identification questions. Leg count is the fastest way to classify an arthropod.

A bug has 3 pairs of legs (6 total): it is an insect. Spiders and scorpions have 4 pairs (8 total): they are arachnids, not insects.

Lobsters are crustaceans, not arachnids, not insects. Crustaceans have two pairs of antennae and breathe through gills. Lobsters, crabs, prawns, and crayfish are all crustaceans. Students sometimes misplace lobsters because of their many appendages, but the two antennae and gill-breathing features confirm crustacean classification.  [NDA 2007-I]

5. True Fish vs Impostor Fish

Several animals have “fish” in their name but are not fish at all. This distinction is tested repeatedly across NDA papers.

When a question asks which is a true fish, look for dogfish, flying fish, or hagfish. All others in the list are impostors.

6. Important Phyla: Specific Facts

Porifera: Sponges

Sponges are the most primitive multicellular animals. They are characterised by pores throughout their bodies and filter water to obtain food. They are sessile (fixed in place) and have no true tissues.

Cnidaria: Corals and Jellyfish

Coral reefs are built by colonial cnidarians. Corals have three absolute requirements:

  • Warm saltwater: temperature 23°C–25°C
  • Shallow depths: not deeper than 50 metres
  • Adequate sunlight

Corals cannot grow in freshwater. Salinity is an absolute requirement. This is a directly tested fact.

Platyhelminthes: Flat Worms

Planaria is a free-living flatworm found in freshwater streams, famous for its regenerative ability. Liver fluke (Fasciola) and tapeworms are parasitic flatworms.

Among Planaria, liver fluke, Wuchereria bancrofti, and Plasmodium, only Planaria is free-living. The others are all parasites.

Annelida: Segmented Worms

Nereis is a marine annelid that moves using parapodia, paddle-like projections on each body segment. Nereis does not use pseudopodia (that is Amoeba), cilia (that is Paramecium), or flagella (that is Euglena).

Nereis is bilaterally symmetrical. Starfish and sea anemones are radially symmetrical.

Earthworms: two high-frequency facts:

Earthworms do NOT moult. Moulting (ecdysis) is the shedding of an exoskeleton. Cockroaches moult (chitin exoskeleton). Cobras moult (scales). Dragonflies moult. Earthworms have no rigid external covering, so there is nothing to moult.  [NDA 2013-II]

Salt on an earthworm kills it through osmotic shock. High salt concentration outside draws water out of the worm’s body cells by osmosis, causing fatal desiccation. The mechanism is osmosis, not toxicity and not pore closure.

7. Vertebrate Classes : Heart Chambers and Temperature

This comparison table is the most exam-dense content in the chapter. The number of heart chambers and blood-temperature type for every vertebrate class must be known precisely.

8. Pisces: Fish

Fish (class Pisces) are cold-blooded aquatic vertebrates. They breathe through gills and have 2-chambered hearts. Sharks are fish, not mammals, despite their large size and ocean habitat. They are cold-blooded, breathe through gills, and do not produce milk.

True fish in this class include: Dogfish (cartilaginous), Flying fish (bony), Hagfish (jawless), Rohu, and Scoliodon (shark).

9. Amphibia

Amphibians are cold-blooded vertebrates with a double life: aquatic larvae (tadpoles) and terrestrial adults. They breathe through both lungs and moist skin. They have 3-chambered hearts.

The class Amphibia includes frogs, toads, and salamanders.  [NDA 2007-II] Salamander is an amphibian, not a mammal, not a fish, not a reptile. It is closely related to frogs and toads and has a three-chambered heart.

Amphibians are the most sensitive vertebrate class to environmental change. Their permeable skin and biphasic life cycle make them vulnerable to water pollution, habitat loss, and climate change. They serve as ecological indicator species.

Frogs breathe through skin (cutaneous respiration), a supplementary respiratory mechanism especially important during winter hibernation underwater.  [NDA 2008-I]

10. Reptilia

Reptiles are cold-blooded vertebrates. They breathe through lungs and have dry, scaly skin. Most have 3-chambered hearts. Examples: lizard, cobra, tortoise.

The Crocodile Exception

The crocodile is a reptile but has a 4-chambered heart. This makes it exceptional among all reptiles. Its heart structure resembles that of a bird or mammal. All other reptiles, lizard, cobra, tortoise, have three chambers. Only the crocodile has four.

Crocodiles store fat in their tail for energy reserves during food scarcity and for buoyancy management.  [NDA 2009-II]

11. Aves: Birds

Birds (class Aves) are warm-blooded vertebrates. They have feathers, beaks, and 4-chambered hearts. They lay hard-shelled eggs. Examples: Pigeon, Peacock, Emu, Kiwi, Ostrich, Parrot.

Bat Is NOT a Bird

A bat is a mammal, not a bird. Bats have wings made of skin membrane, not feathers. They are warm-blooded, give birth to live young, and nurse with milk. Bats belong to the order Chiroptera within the class Mammalia. They are the only flying mammals.

Bats navigate using echolocation. They emit high-frequency ultrasonic waves and detect reflected echoes. This is a neurological and sensory ability, not a visual one.  [NDA 2013-II]

Flightless Birds Are Still Birds

Emu, Kiwi, and Ostrich cannot fly, but they are birds. They have feathers, beaks, and lay eggs. Being flightless does not remove them from class Aves.

12. Mammalia

Mammals are warm-blooded vertebrates with body hair, a 4-chambered heart, and mammary glands that produce milk for their young. Most give birth to live young (viviparous). No mammal has a three-chambered heart. That claim is false. All mammals have four chambers.

The Marine Mammal

Living in water does not make an animal a fish. This is the most tested individual classification error in the chapter.

Dolphins, whales, and seals are mammals. They breathe air through lungs. They are warm-blooded. They give birth to live young. They nurse with milk.  [NDA 2009-I | NDA 2014-II]

Sharks are fish, not mammals. Sharks are cold-blooded, breathe through gills, do not produce milk, and belong to the class Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fish) under Pisces.

IMPORTANT The standard question: “Which of the following is NOT a mammal: dolphin, seal, shark, whale?” The answer is shark, every time. Dolphin is mammal | Whale is mammal | Seal is mammal | Shark is not fish [NDA 2009-I | NDA 2014-II]

Platypus: Egg-Laying Mammal

The platypus is a mammal despite laying eggs. It has body hair, produces milk, is warm-blooded, and has a four-chambered heart. Egg-laying does not remove it from Mammalia. It belongs to the subgroup monotremes.  [NDA 2013-II]

Great Indian Bustard = bird. Hornbill = bird. Gharial = reptile (crocodilian). Platypus = mammal.

Other Specific Mammal Facts

Gorilla is the largest great ape. Among spider monkey, baboon, gorilla, and howler monkey, gorilla is the largest.  [NDA 2011-II]

Blue whale gives birth to the largest baby of any animal.  [NDA 2013-II]

Silk is composed of protein, specifically the fibrous protein fibroin produced by silkworms. Silk is not a carbohydrate and not a lipid. It is a protein-based natural fibre.

Animal cells do NOT contain cellulose. Cellulose is found only in plant cell walls. No animal, from the simplest sponge to humans, has cellulose in its cells.  [NDA 2015-II]

13. Warm-Blooded vs Cold-Blooded

This is the single highest-frequency classification theme in the chapter. The division is clean and absolute.

Cold-blooded animals require significantly less energy to survive. They do not expend metabolic energy maintaining body temperature. Warm-blooded animals can remain active in cold environments.

Cold-blooded does NOT mean “blood without haemoglobin” or “not ferocious.” It means body temperature varies with the environment.  [NDA 2012-II]

Parrot + Platypus + Kangaroo: what do they share? All three are warm-blooded (homothermy is their common characteristic). Not oviparity. Kangaroos give birth to live young. Not toothless jaws. Only warm-bloodedness is common to all three.

Polar bears live in the Arctic (North Pole). Penguins live in Antarctica (South Pole). They are on opposite ends of the Earth. Under natural conditions, they never coexist. This is a biogeographic fact.

14. Protochordata

Protochordates are marine animals that possess a notochord, the diagnostic chordate character, but never develop a true vertebral column. They occupy a position between true invertebrates and vertebrates. They are not classified as Vertebrata.
