India is rich in minerals. The Peninsular Plateau, formed from ancient Gondwana rocks, holds vast deposits of coal, iron ore, manganese, bauxite, copper, and mica. The northeastern plateau region and the northwestern region also have important minerals. Energy resources power India’s industries, homes, and transport, using both conventional sources (coal, petroleum, natural gas, nuclear) and non-conventional sources (solar, wind, hydel, tidal, geothermal).

NDA tests this chapter frequently through mineral-location matching, coal field questions, oil refinery sequences, and nuclear power plant locations. These questions reward students who have worked carefully with a map of India’s resources.


Types of Minerals

Ferrous minerals contain iron : examples: iron ore, manganese, nickel, cobalt.

Non-ferrous minerals do not contain iron : examples: copper, bauxite (aluminium ore), lead, zinc, gold, silver.

Non-metallic minerals are not metals: examples: mica, limestone, gypsum, graphite, salt.

Energy minerals are used as fuel: examples: coal, petroleum, natural gas, uranium.

The spatial distribution of minerals in India is uneven. Most minerals are concentrated in the Peninsular Plateau. The Himalayan region is poor in minerals. Since colonial times, India’s mining industry has been export-oriented.


Iron Ore

Iron ore is India’s most important metallic mineral, the raw material for steel.

Types of iron ore from best to poorest quality: Magnetite → Hematite → Limonite → Siderite. [NDA 2008-II]

Magnetite is the best quality: 60–70% pure iron, black in colour, and possesses magnetic properties. All three of these facts about magnetite are correct. [NDA 2017-II] Hematite is second best: reddish in colour, most widely found in India.

Manganese

Manganese is used in steel manufacturing (to make steel hard and tough) and in dry cell batteries. Leading producer of manganese in India = Karnataka. [NDA 2023-I] Other important states: Odisha, Maharashtra, MP, Goa. Key locations: Shimoga (Karnataka), Balaghat (MP).


Bauxite (Aluminium Ore)

Bauxite is the ore from which aluminium is extracted. Major producing states: Odisha and Madhya Pradesh are the top two. Other states include Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Chhattisgarh. Key location: Kolhapur (Maharashtra). [NDA 2006-II]

Ratnagiri bauxite area is in Maharashtra, NOT in Karnataka. [NDA 2015-I]


Copper

India is comparatively NOT rich in copper. Unlike bauxite, iron, and manganese, which are found in large quantities, India imports significant copper to meet industrial demand. [NDA 2007-II]

Major copper areas: Singhbhum (Jharkhand): main copper mining area; Balaghat (Madhya Pradesh); Ghatsila (Jharkhand); Khetri (Rajasthan): Khetri copper mine; Malanjkhand (MP).


Zinc, Lead, and Gold

Zinc: Zawar mines (Udaipur, Rajasthan) is India’s most important zinc-lead deposit. [NDA 2015-II | NDA 2023-II]

Gold: Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) in Karnataka: famous gold mines, now largely exhausted. Hutti gold mines, Raichur, Karnataka: still producing. Anantpur district: gold fields in Andhra Pradesh.


Mica

Mica is a non-metallic mineral used mainly in electrical and electronic industries, because it is an excellent insulator of electricity. [NDA 2023-I]

Major mica belt: Jharkhand (Koderma, Giridih): largest producer; Andhra Pradesh (Nellore): second largest; Rajasthan (Bhilwara, Ajmer). [NDA 2006-II]

Vindhyan system of rocks is important for precious stones and building materials (sandstone, limestone, diamonds) : NOT for iron ore, bauxite, or copper.


Coal

Coal is India’s most important energy resource, providing about 50% of India’s commercial energy.

Types of coal from best to worst quality: Anthracite → Bituminous → Lignite → Peat

Anthracite = hardest, highest carbon content, cleanest burning; rare in India. Bituminous = most common in India; used in iron and steel (coking coal) and thermal power. Lignite = brown coal; lower quality; found in Tamil Nadu (Neyveli). Peat = lowest grade, partially formed coal.

The Gondwana Coal Fields

Most of India’s coal is found in the Gondwana rock system of the Peninsular Plateau: Damodar Valley (Jharkhand/WB), Sone Valley, Mahanadi Valley, Godavari Valley.

The Damuda Series of the Gondwana system has three stages:

Barakar (bottom): contains coal. Barren Measures (middle): contains neither coal nor iron; called “Barren” for this reason. [NDA 2012-I] Raniganj (top): contains coal.

Most coal and ferrous minerals in India occur in the Peninsula, south of the Vindhyas. This region was once part of Gondwana.

Kalakot coal field is in the Himalayan Mountain region (J&K): a Tertiary coal field, different from the Gondwana coal fields of peninsular India. [NDA 2017-II]

Petroleum (Oil) and Oil Refineries

India has limited petroleum reserves. Oil is found in anticlinal structures, dome-shaped rock structures where oil and gas are trapped under impermeable rock.

Offshore: Bombay High (Arabian Sea, offshore Mumbai): India’s largest oil-producing area. Krishna-Godavari Basin (Bay of Bengal).

Onshore: Assam (Digboi, Naharkatiya, Moran): India’s oldest oil fields. Gujarat (Ankleshwar, Kalol, Khambhat). Rajasthan (Barmer: recent discovery).

Ledo is NOT an oil field. It is a town near coal mines in Assam. [NDA 2015-II]

Natural Gas

Natural gas is increasingly important in India, for cooking (LPG), power generation, and as a cleaner fuel. In a thermal power station, fuels (coal, oil, or natural gas) are burned to heat water and produce steam, which turns a turbine to generate electricity.


Nuclear Energy

Nuclear power generates electricity by splitting uranium atoms (fission). India has a three-stage nuclear programme.

Renewable energy can be obtained from Biomass. Biomass (plant material, animal waste) is renewable because plants can be regrown.
