World Economic Geography – NDA Geography Notes

Economic geography studies where economic activities take place and why: where industries locate, which trade routes connect the world, and which straits and canals are critical chokepoints for global commerce.

For NDA, this chapter is tested primarily through two types of questions: city-industry match questions (Detroit – automobiles, Antwerp – diamond cutting) and straits-canals questions (Kiel Canal connects which seas, which strait separates which countries). These are direct factual questions. The chapter also covers world rivers flowing to their seas and specific islands.

Macau (China’s Special Administrative Region) is situated close to the Pearl River Estuary: near Hong Kong.

Orient Express: the famous railway historically connecting Western Europe to Istanbul, passing through Germany, France, Austria, Hungary, and Romania.

Landlocked Water Bodies

The Caspian Sea is completely landlocked: surrounded by Kazakhstan, Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkmenistan. It has no natural connection to any ocean. It is technically the world’s largest lake.

The Mediterranean connects to the Atlantic (through Gibraltar). The Black Sea connects to the Mediterranean (through Bosporus). The Red Sea connects to the Indian Ocean.

The Volga does NOT drain into the Black Sea: it drains into the Caspian Sea.

Asian and African Rivers

Irrawaddy River: flows through Myanmar; major city on its banks is Yangon (Rangoon). [NDA 2007-I]

Victoria Falls: on the Zambezi River: on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. One of the world’s largest waterfalls, named by explorer David Livingstone in 1855. [NDA 2007-II]

Mekong Delta: in Vietnam: the river flows from Tibet through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and forms its delta in Vietnam before emptying into the South China Sea.

Buenos Aires and Montevideo: on the banks of River Plate (Río de la Plata). Montreal: on the St Lawrence River, Canada.

Island Geography

Isle of Youth (Isla de la Juventud): found near Cuba: the second largest island belonging to Cuba. [NDA 2012-I]

Faroe Islands: in the Atlantic Ocean between Scotland and Iceland: a self-governing territory of Denmark. The name comes from Old Norse meaning “sheep”, also known as the Sheep Islands. [NDA 2014-I]
