Regional Geography – NDA Geography Notes
Exam Relevance: Caucasus vs Ural, 38th Parallel, Sahel, Andes, Great Lakes, Great Artesian Basin, Antarctica Facts, Pacific Island Groups
Reading Time: 25–30 minutes | Last Updated: 2026
Regional geography is the study of specific parts of the world, covering their physical features, countries, capitals, borders, and distinctive characteristics.
For NDA, regional geography questions are direct and factual: which country shares a border with another, which mountain range separates two regions, which country is landlocked, or what the capital of a country is. Asia (particularly South and Southeast Asia) and Africa get the most attention. Europe, the Americas, and Oceania yield specific but reliable facts about capitals, rivers, the Great Barrier Reef, and Antarctica.
Asia: Mountains, Passes and Deserts
Caucasus Mountains: lie between the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea, separating Europe from Asia in this region. Countries in the Caucasus: Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan. [NDA 2020-I]
The mountain that lies between the Caspian Sea and Black Sea – Caucasus Mountains. [NDA 2020-I]
Ural Mountains: run north-south through Russia, forming the traditional boundary between Europe and Asia across Russia’s central landmass.
Tawang Pass: a mountain corridor in Arunachal Pradesh connecting India with China (Tibet). [NDA 2014-I]
Taklamakan Desert: located in the Tarim Basin of Xinjiang in western China: one of the largest shifting sand deserts in the world. Classified as Central Asia in physical geography terms. [NDA 2017-II]
Asia: Countries and Borders
38th Parallel: separates North Korea and South Korea. (The 49th Parallel separates USA and Canada: a different boundary entirely.)
Israel’s neighbours: Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Egypt. Turkey, Cyprus, and Yemen do NOT border Israel.
South Asia (SAARC): Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. China, Afghanistan, and Myanmar are NOT part of South Asia.
Arabian Peninsula: Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, Yemen, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain. Jordan is NOT part of the Arabian Peninsula: Jordan is in the Levant (eastern Mediterranean region).
Between Black Sea and Caspian Sea: Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan. Ukraine is NOT between them: it lies further northwest.
Baltic States: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania. Slovakia is NOT a Baltic nation: it is a Central European landlocked country.
Armenia: a landlocked country in the South Caucasus. Syria, Azerbaijan, and Jordan all have some sea/coastal access.
Jordan: landlocked country; created through the British Mandate system after WWI.

Mekong River: flows from Tibet through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and forms its delta in Vietnam before emptying into the South China Sea.
Asia: Andaman and Nicobar Islands
Two correct statements about Andaman and Nicobar Islands: [NDA 2010-II]
- Enjoys equatorial climate: TRUE (warm, humid, year-round rainfall)
- Only place in India where a volcano is located: TRUE (Barren Island: India’s only active volcano)
- Only place in India where coral bed is found: FALSE (Lakshadweep also has coral reefs and has more extensive formations)
Answer: I and II only. [NDA 2010-II]
Europe: Key Facts
Mountain ranges: Alps (Switzerland, Austria, France, Italy, Germany) | Carpathians (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, Romania) | Apennines (Italy) | Pyrenees (Spain–France border).

| Prague | Czech Republic | Vltava (NOT Danube) |
The Danube does NOT flow through Prague. Prague is on the Vltava River.
France wine industry: Southern France is famous for wine making because the Mediterranean climate produces a variety of fruits.
Africa: Landlocked Countries
Many African countries are landlocked (having no coastline).
Landlocked (no coastline): Botswana | Zambia | Zimbabwe | Uganda | Rwanda | Burundi | Malawi | Niger | Mali | Chad | South Sudan | Central African Republic | Burkina Faso.
NOT landlocked (have coastlines): Nigeria (Gulf of Guinea, Atlantic) | Angola (Atlantic) | Mozambique (Indian Ocean) | Tanzania (Indian Ocean) | Kenya (Indian Ocean) | Cameroon | Ghana | Senegal.
Nigeria is NOT landlocked: it has a coastline on the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic Ocean).
Angola is NOT landlocked: it has a long Atlantic coastline.
Rwanda is located south of the equator: in East Africa.
Malawi: landlocked country in southeastern Africa, formerly called Nyasaland.
Africa: Physical Features
Sahel Region: the semi-arid transitional zone south of the Sahara Desert, stretching from Senegal to Sudan. Desertification is advancing southward. The Sahara is encroaching on the Sahel. The Sahel is the southern moving edge of the Sahara Desert. [NDA 2016-II]
Virunga Mountains, where endangered mountain gorillas are found. It is a chain of volcanic mountains spanning Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Comoros Islands: in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and the African mainland: of volcanic origin.
African rivers: Nile: world’s longest (debated); drains into Mediterranean. Congo (Zaire): second longest in Africa; drains into Atlantic. Zambezi: Victoria Falls; drains into Indian Ocean.
North America
Great Lakes: the five Great Lakes of North America: Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, Ontario (mnemonic: HOMES).
The line passing through Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Lake Huron, and Lake Superior represents an internal waterway route to the USA: connecting to the St Lawrence Seaway. [NDA 2009-II]
49th Parallel: separates USA from Canada across most of the western border.
Hernando Cortez (Cortés): first European to encounter the cacao (cocoa) plant, when he conquered the Aztec Empire in Mexico in the early 16th century.
South America
Andes Mountains: the world’s longest continental mountain range: running along the western coast of South America through Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. [NDA 2008-I]
Amazon Basin: covered by the world’s largest tropical rainforest (Selvas). The Amazon River is the world’s largest by volume of water.
Tropical rain forests lie in the Amazon Basin. [NDA 2007-I]
South American grasslands: Llanos – Venezuela/Colombia (tropical savanna) | Campos – Brazil (tropical savanna) | Pampas – Argentina (temperate grassland).
Oceania: Australia and Pacific Islands
Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system, stretching about 2,300 km along the northeastern coast of Queensland, Australia. The Coral Sea separates it from the South Pacific.

The Pacific Islands southeast of New Guinea to the Fiji Islands are called Melanesia.
Hawaii and Tahiti are in POLYNESIA: not Melanesia.
Antarctica
★ IMPORTANT Three NDA-confirmed facts about Antarctica (all three correct):
- Antarctica has the highest average elevation of all continents (~2,300 m): due to the thick ice sheet.
- Mount Vinson (4,892 m) is the highest peak in Antarctica: NOT Mount Ross.
- The waters of the Southern Ocean move anticlockwise around Antarctica (viewed from above the South Pole, the eastward-flowing current appears anticlockwise).
Antarctica is larger than Europe: approximately 14 million km² vs Europe’s 10 million km².
India’s Antarctic Research Stations:
| Station | Sequence |
| Dakshin Gangotri | India’s FIRST station |
| Maitri | India’s second station |
