Exam Relevance: High Frequency | National Highways, Golden Quadrilateral, Railway Zone HQs, National Waterways, Major Ports, UDAN Scheme
Reading Time: 30–35 minutes | Last Updated: 2025
Transport connects people, markets, and resources. Without good roads, railways, ports, and airports, economic development cannot happen. India has one of the largest transport networks in the world, in total road length, railway track, and number of ports.
NDA tests this chapter through National Highway numbers and routes, the Golden Quadrilateral, railway zone headquarters, National Waterways, major ports and their special features, and government transport schemes. These are direct factual questions. Either you know the facts or you do not. Working with a map of India’s transport network is the best way to prepare.
Road Transport
Roads are the most common form of transport in India. Types include National Highways (connecting major cities, maintained by the central government), State Highways (within states), District Roads (to district headquarters), and Village Roads (to market towns).
The largest concentration of roads in India is in the Northern Plains. [NDA 2010-II]
Ratio of surfaced road to total road length is LOWER in the Northern Plains: Despite having the most roads, many village roads in the plains are still unmetalled. [NDA 2010-II]
Maharashtra has the maximum share of national highways in India: The terrain is relatively flat, and the state is highly developed economically. [NDA 2022-II]
National Highways
Key National Highways
| NH | Route | Key Cities | PYQs |
| NH 1 | Delhi to Attari (Pakistan border) | Amritsar | — |
| NH 2 | Delhi to Kolkata | Agra, Varanasi, Dhanbad | — |
| NH 4 | Mumbai to Chennai | Pune, Belgaum, Bangalore | — |
| NH 5 | Kolkata to Chennai (via Odisha coast) | Bhubaneswar | [NDA 2007-I] |
| NH 6 | Hazira (Gujarat) to Kolkata | Nagpur, Raipur, Sambalpur | — |
| NH 7 | Varanasi to Kanyakumari | Nagpur, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Madurai | [NDA 2006-II |
| NH 8 | Delhi to Mumbai | Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Vadodara | [NDA 2007-II] |
| NH 9 | Pune to Hyderabad | — | [NDA 2007-I] |
| NH 12 | Jabalpur to Jaipur | Bhopal | [NDA 2007-I] |
NH 7: Varanasi to Kanyakumari: the longest NH in India under the old system. It passes through Jabalpur, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Madurai. NH 7 does NOT start from Delhi: it starts from Varanasi. [NDA 2008-I]
Golden Quadrilateral and Road Corridors
Golden Quadrilateral
The Golden Quadrilateral connects four major cities: Delhi → Mumbai → Chennai → Kolkata. It forms a rough quadrilateral shape across India, NOT a pentagon, and Bengaluru is NOT one of the four corners.
Passes through: Vadodara-Pune-Visakhapatnam-Varanasi. [NDA 2013-I]
Longest section of the Golden Quadrilateral = Kolkata-Chennai. [NDA 2017-I]
North-South and East-West Corridors
North-South Corridor connects Srinagar (J&K) to Kanyakumari (Tamil Nadu).
East-West Corridor connects Silchar (Assam) to Porbandar (Gujarat).
The North-South and East-West corridors cross each other at Jhansi (UP). [NDA 2023-II]
Bharatmala Project and Atal Tunnel
Bharatmala Pariyojana is related to improvement of road connectivity / national highway networks in India. It is a highway construction and upgradation programme, NOT about interlinking rivers, railways between cities, or gas pipelines. [NDA 2018-I | NDA 2021-I]
The Atal Tunnel (formerly Rohtang Tunnel) reduced the distance between Manali and Leh. It passes under Rohtang Pass, connecting the Kullu Valley (Manali) to Lahaul-Spiti district and onward to Leh, keeping the region accessible in winter when snow closes Rohtang Pass.
Railway Transport
India has one of the largest railway networks in the world, with about 68,000 km of track.
Railway Zone Headquarters
| Zone | Headquarters |
| Northern | Delhi |

Northeast state capitals connected by railway: Among Imphal, Agartala, Kohima, and Aizawl, only Agartala (Tripura) is connected by railway.
Water Transport: National Waterways
The National Waterways Act, 2016 declared 111 waterways as National Waterways. India has one of the world’s longest navigable inland water networks. Inland waterways carry much less than 25% of total cargo. [NDA 2022-II]

NW 2 (Sadiya-Dhubri stretch on the Brahmaputra) is the longest national waterway. [NDA 2008-I]
Palk Strait is too shallow for large ships. Ships going from Chennai to Kochi must go around Sri Lanka because the Palk Strait is too shallow for ocean-going vessels.
Headquarters of Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI): Noida.
National Inland Navigation Institute: Kolkata.
Sea Transport: Major Ports of India
India has 12 major ports and about 200 non-major / intermediate ports. 95% of India’s trade by volume is moved by sea.
Tamil Nadu has more than two major ports: Chennai (Madras), Tuticorin (V.O. Chidambaranar Port), and Kamarajar (Ennore Port).
