India: Location & Extent – NDA Geography Notes
Exam Relevance: High Frequency | Tropic of Cancer States, Standard Meridian, IST Calculation, Extreme Points, Land Borders, Coastline, Gulfs and Straits
Reading Time: 30–35 minutes | Last Updated: 2026
India’s location and extent is one of those chapters where the facts look simple but the exam makes them surprisingly tricky. NDA has repeatedly tested the exact states the Tropic of Cancer passes through, the logic behind India’s Standard Meridian, the time difference between India’s eastern and western extremes, which country shares the longest land border with India, which state has the longest coastline, and details about India’s gulfs and straits.
What makes this chapter challenging is not the concept. It is precision. A wrong state name, a confused longitude, or a reversed east-west sequence costs marks in what should be straightforward questions. NDA 2007-II asked about the Tropic of Cancer in the northeast and gave four northeastern states as options, betting that students would confuse Mizoram with Assam or Manipur.
India’s Position on the Globe
India lies entirely in the Northern Hemisphere and entirely in the Eastern Hemisphere. It sits on the southern part of the Asian continent, occupying a central position between East Africa and Southeast Asia.
The Indian Ocean is named after India. It is the only ocean in the world named after a country. This reflects how central India’s position is to that region’s geography and maritime history.
| Parameter | Detail |
| Latitudinal extent | 8°4’N to 37°6’N |
| Longitudinal extent | 68°7’E to 97°25’E |
| Total area | 32,87,263 sq km |
| Rank in world by area | 7th largest |
| North-South distance | ~3,214 km |
| East-West distance | ~2,933 km |
India is the 7th largest country in the world by area. Among Asian countries, only Russia and China are larger. The north-south extent is slightly greater than the east-west extent, which means India is taller than it is wide on a map.
Because India spans nearly 30 degrees of longitude from east to west, the sun rises almost two hours earlier in Arunachal Pradesh than in Gujarat. That difference is the reason India needs a Standard Meridian.
[Image Suggestion: Political map of India showing the full latitudinal and longitudinal extent, with the Tropic of Cancer marked as a horizontal line and the Standard Meridian marked as a vertical line, labelled at their intersections with key states]
The Tropic of Cancer
The Tropic of Cancer is the imaginary line drawn at 23°30’N latitude. It marks the northernmost point on Earth where the Sun can be directly overhead. This happens on the Summer Solstice around June 21 each year.
The Tropic of Cancer divides India, and that is what makes it geographically significant. Areas south of the Tropic of Cancer have a tropical climate: hot and humid year-round, with the Sun nearly overhead. Areas north of the Tropic of Cancer have a subtropical climate, with more pronounced seasons and cooler winters.
The 8 States the Tropic Passes Through
The Tropic of Cancer passes through exactly 8 states, in order from west to east:
Gujarat → Rajasthan → Madhya Pradesh → Chhattisgarh → Jharkhand → West Bengal → Tripura → Mizoram
Of these 8 states, only 2 are coastal: Gujarat (Arabian Sea) and West Bengal (Bay of Bengal). The remaining 6 are landlocked.
Several specific facts within this topic are tested with precision in NDA. Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, is the only state capital in India that lies directly on the Tropic of Cancer. [NDA 2006-I] The Tropic of Cancer passes through Mizoram in the northeast, not Assam, Manipur, or Nagaland. This is one of the most repeated traps. [NDA 2007-II] The Tropic of Cancer does not pass through Odisha. Odisha lies south of it. [NDA 2009-II]
After passing through West Bengal, the Tropic of Cancer crosses into Bangladesh before re-entering India through Tripura. This is why West Bengal and Tripura are not adjacent on the Tropic. Bangladesh lies between them.
Madhya Pradesh has the longest stretch of the Tropic of Cancer within India. Rajasthan has the shortest. Students frequently reverse these two.
States that do not lie on the Tropic but commonly appear as wrong options in NDA: Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha.
India’s Standard Meridian and Indian Standard Time
India spans nearly 30 degrees of longitude. If every city used its own local solar time, Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh would be about two hours ahead of Dwarka in Gujarat, making railways, communications, and administration chaotic. To avoid this, India chose one longitude as its Standard Meridian.
India’s Standard Meridian = 82°30’E (82½°E) [NDA 2012-I]
This meridian passes through Mirzapur (also known as Naini), near Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. Mirzapur is the reference city for Indian Standard Time. When an NDA question asks which city IST refers to and the options include Allahabad, choose Allahabad, because Mirzapur is adjacent to and associated with Allahabad (now Prayagraj). [NDA 2008-I]
Why 82½°E was chosen: India’s westernmost point is near 68°E and its easternmost is near 97°E. The midpoint of this range is roughly 82.5°E, central between the two extremes. It also happens to be a convenient multiple of 7.5°, which gives a whole number of minutes when converted to time.
Calculating IST
The Earth rotates 360° in 24 hours. That means 15° every hour, or 1° every 4 minutes.
82.5° × 4 minutes = 330 minutes = 5 hours 30 minutes
IST = GMT + 5 hours 30 minutes
India is ahead of Greenwich, not behind it. Countries east of Greenwich are always ahead. [NDA 2013-II]
States on the Standard Meridian (82½°E)
| State | Note |
| Uttar Pradesh | Mirzapur: reference city for IST |
| Madhya Pradesh | — |
| Chhattisgarh | — |
| Odisha | — |
| Andhra Pradesh | Southernmost state on the Standard Meridian |
States that are not on the Standard Meridian but appear as distractors in NDA: Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Telangana, Tamil Nadu. [NDA 2015-II]
India has a single time zone. Even though India spans nearly two hours of solar time, it uses one unified Standard Time. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep also follow IST. They do not have separate time zones.
Sunrise Difference: East vs West
The sun rises about 2 hours earlier in Arunachal Pradesh (near 97°E) than in Gujarat (near 68°E). The difference is roughly 29 degrees. At 4 minutes per degree, that gives approximately 116 minutes, close to 2 hours. [NDA 2017-II]
Sunrise order among northeastern cities (earliest first): Itanagar → Aizawl → Agartala → Imphal. The further east a city is, the earlier its sunrise. [NDA 2018-II]
The local time at Chennai and Lucknow is almost the same, because they sit on nearly the same longitude (~80°E and ~81°E). The local time of Mumbai is not ahead of Kolkata. Mumbai is west of Kolkata, so Kolkata’s time is ahead. [NDA 2012-II]
India’s Extreme Points
| Direction | Location | State/UT |
| Northernmost | Indira Col | Ladakh |
| Southernmost (mainland) | Cape Comorin / Kanyakumari | Tamil Nadu |
| Southernmost (overall) | Indira Point, Great Nicobar | Andaman & Nicobar Islands |
| Easternmost | Kibithu | Arunachal Pradesh |
| Westernmost | Ghuar Mota / Sir Creek area | Gujarat |
Indira Point is the southernmost tip of India overall, on Great Nicobar Island. It partially submerged during the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. It is distinct from Kanyakumari, which is only the southernmost point of the Indian mainland.
The easternmost point is Kibithu in Arunachal Pradesh [NDA 2019-I]. Dong (a nearby village) sometimes appears as a distractor. The northernmost location among commonly tested options is Indira Col in Ladakh. [NDA 2023-I]

India’s Land Borders and Neighbours
India shares land borders with 7 countries. The country that shares the longest land border with India is Bangladesh, not China or Pakistan. This surprises most students.
Border Lengths: Longest to Shortest
| Country | Approximate Length | Direction |
| Bangladesh | ~4,156 km | East |
| China | ~3,488 km | North and Northeast |
| Pakistan | ~3,323 km | Northwest |
| Nepal | ~1,751 km | North |
| Myanmar | ~1,643 km | East |
| Bhutan | ~699 km | Northeast |
| Afghanistan | ~106 km | Northwest (through Ladakh) |
Bangladesh’s border is the longest because it stretches across five Indian states: West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram.
Afghanistan shares only a very short boundary (~106 km) with India through the Ladakh region. Ladakh is the only Indian territory that shares a border with Afghanistan. No other state or UT touches Afghanistan.
States and UTs Bordering Each Country
| Country | Indian States/UTs on the Border |
| Afghanistan | Ladakh (UT) only |
| Pakistan | Ladakh, J&K, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat |
| China | Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh |
| Nepal | Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim |
| Bhutan | Sikkim, West Bengal, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh |
| Bangladesh | West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram |
| Myanmar | Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram |
Manipur does not share a border with Bangladesh. It shares a border with Myanmar.
Chhattisgarh has no international boundary. It is surrounded entirely by other Indian states. Madhya Pradesh shares its border with 5 states: Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.
States and UTs Bordering Three Countries
Four states/UTs share borders with three countries each:
Ladakh: Pakistan, China, Afghanistan | Sikkim: Nepal, China, Bhutan | West Bengal: Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh | Arunachal Pradesh: China, Bhutan, Myanmar
Tripura’s geography: Tripura is nearly surrounded on three sides by Bangladesh. It connects to the rest of India only through a narrow corridor via Assam and Mizoram.
India also has maritime neighbours: Pakistan, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, and Indonesia share India’s sea boundaries.
India’s Coastline
India has a total coastline of 7,516 km, one of the longest in Asia. The peninsula is shaped roughly like a triangle pointing southward, with the Arabian Sea to the west, the Bay of Bengal to the east, and the Indian Ocean at the tip.
Nine states and several Union Territories touch the coastline:
Western coast (Arabian Sea): Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala
Eastern coast (Bay of Bengal): Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal
Coastline Length Ranking
| Rank | State | Note |
| 1 | Gujarat | ~1,600 km : longest |
| 2 | Andhra Pradesh | ~974 km |
| 3 | Tamil Nadu | ~906 km |
| Last | Goa | Shortest among coastal states |
Gujarat has the longest coastline among all Indian states. [NDA 2017-II] Gujarat’s coastline is long because of its highly irregular, indented shoreline. The Gulf of Kutch and Gulf of Khambhat both cut deeply into it.
The smallest Union Territory by area is Lakshadweep. It covers only about 32 sq km and is a group of small coral islands in the Arabian Sea. [NDA 2019-I]
Gulfs and Straits Around India
Gulf of Kutch sits on the western edge of Gujarat, near the Kutch district. Bordered by largely marshy and arid land, with the Rann of Kutch nearby.
Gulf of Khambhat (Gulf of Cambay) is a narrow arm of the Arabian Sea on the southeastern coast of Gujarat. The Narmada and Tapti rivers both drain into this gulf. Its funnel shape creates very high tidal ranges.
Gulf of Mannar lies between the southern tip of Tamil Nadu and the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka. This is where the famous Ram Setu (Adam’s Bridge), a chain of limestone shoals, connects India and Sri Lanka. [NDA 2011-II]
Palk Strait is a narrow strip of water separating Tamil Nadu from northwestern Sri Lanka. It connects the Bay of Bengal in the north to the Gulf of Mannar in the south. The Palk Strait is also where Adam’s Bridge is situated, the waterway that separates India from Sri Lanka.
India’s territorial sea extends 12 nautical miles from the coast. One nautical mile is approximately 1.852 km, which is longer than a statute (land) mile.
[Image Suggestion: Map of peninsular India showing the Gulf of Kutch, Gulf of Khambhat, Gulf of Mannar, and Palk Strait, with Sri Lanka visible to the southeast and Adam’s Bridge marked as a dotted chain of islands]
Administrative Units
India is divided into 28 states and 8 Union Territories after the reorganisation of J&K and Ladakh in 2019.
Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh in June 2014. It is surrounded by 5 states: Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh. [NDA 2015-I]
The state with the longest extension in north-south direction among Indian states is Andhra Pradesh (after bifurcation). Among the commonly compared states (Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu), Andhra Pradesh is the largest and Telangana is the smallest.
