Geography: Introduction – NDA Geography Notes

Before studying the Earth, its mountains, oceans, winds, and weather, it helps to understand what Geography actually is and who first studied it seriously. This is a short chapter. But the questions that come from it are very direct and very easy to score from. Who gave Geography its name? Who first measured the size of the Earth? These are one-line answers. Students who know them gain easy marks.
What is Geography?
The word Geography comes from two Greek words. The first is geo, meaning Earth. The second is graphia, meaning description or writing. So Geography literally means the description of the Earth.
Geography is the study of the Earth’s surface: its landforms, oceans, atmosphere, climate, vegetation, and the people who live on it. It tries to answer questions like: Why is it hot near the equator? Why do deserts form where they do? Why do some regions receive more rainfall than others?
For a science student, Geography is not very different from what you already know. Physics helps you understand the atmosphere and heat. Chemistry helps you understand rocks and soils. Biology helps you understand vegetation and ecosystems. The difference is that in Geography, you study these ideas at the scale of the entire Earth, not in a laboratory.
Who Coined the Word Geography?
The term Geography was first used by a Greek scholar named Eratosthenes around the 3rd century BCE, approximately 2,200 years ago. [NDA 2008-II]
Eratosthenes did two important things. He gave the subject its name. And he was the first person in history to measure the circumference of the Earth. [NDA 2008-II]
How Eratosthenes Measured the Earth
This is a story worth understanding, not just as a fact, but as an example of how careful observation and logical thinking can solve a big problem.
Eratosthenes lived in Alexandria, Egypt. He heard that in a city called Syene (modern Aswan, also in Egypt) on the day of the summer solstice (around June 21), the Sun was exactly overhead at noon. Sunlight fell straight to the bottom of a deep well with no shadow at all.
On that same day in Alexandria, he measured the angle of a shadow and found it was about 7.2 degrees. The Sun was not directly overhead in Alexandria. It was slightly off to the side.
He then reasoned carefully. If the Earth is a sphere and the Sun’s rays are parallel, the difference in angle between the two cities tells you what fraction of the Earth’s full circle separates them. The angle was 7.2 degrees, which is 7.2 out of 360 degrees, or one-fiftieth of a full circle. He knew the distance between Alexandria and Syene. Multiplying that distance by 50 gave him the full circumference of the Earth.
His answer was remarkably close to what we know today. The Earth’s circumference is about 40,075 km.
The two cities used in Eratosthenes’ experiment were Alexandria and Syene, both in Egypt.
Other Important Early Geographers
Several other Greek thinkers made important contributions to Geography. NDA occasionally uses them as wrong options, so knowing who did what prevents confusion.
Hecataeus (~500 BCE) was one of the earliest Greek geographers. He drew one of the first maps of the known world and wrote a book describing the lands and peoples around the Mediterranean Sea.
Herodotus (~450 BCE) is known as the Father of History. He also wrote extensively about the geography of the lands he visited: Egypt, Persia, and many other regions.
Aristotle (~350 BCE) was a philosopher who argued that the Earth must be spherical. His evidence was that during a lunar eclipse, the shadow of the Earth on the Moon is always circular, no matter the angle. Only a sphere casts a circular shadow from every direction. Aristotle argued the Earth is round, but he did not measure it.
Ptolemy (~150 CE) wrote a book called Geographia in which he described how to make maps using latitude and longitude. His work influenced map-making for over a thousand years.

Why Geography Matters for an NDA Aspirant
Geography shapes everything about how humans live: the food people eat, the work they do, the clothes they wear, and the way wars are fought. A student preparing for the Indian Army through NDA needs to understand geography because military strategy depends on understanding terrain, rivers, mountains, and weather. A soldier who understands why a river floods, why a mountain pass is strategic, or why a region receives no rainfall will always have an advantage.
