Every living thing eventually dies. But before it does, it produces offspring, new individuals of the same species. This process is reproduction. It ensures the survival of the species.
Reproduction can be sexual (requires two parents and the fusion of gametes) or asexual (requires only one parent, no fertilisation needed). This distinction is important. Sex organs are not mandatory for reproduction. Many organisms reproduce perfectly well without them.
For the NDA exam, this chapter delivers consistent, precision questions: the cervix as female-only (tested twice), Cowper’s gland as male reproductive not intestine, spermatogenesis in testes only, oral contraceptive pills inhibiting ovulation, LH as the ovulation trigger, artificial insemination with sperm only, and colostrum. Every section below marks exactly where exam questions originate.
1. What is Reproduction?
Reproduction is the biological process by which organisms produce new individuals of their own species. It ensures continuity of the species across generations.

The urethra is NOT part of the female reproductive system. The urethra carries urine from the bladder to the outside. It is a urinary structure. In females, the urethra and vagina are two entirely separate openings. [NDA 2014-II]

There is no male equivalent of the cervix. This is the single most frequently tested anatomical misplacement in this chapter. When the cervix appears as an option in a “which belongs to the male system?” question: it is ALWAYS the wrong answer. |
4. Spermatogenesis vs Maturation and Motility
Spermatogenesis: the actual production of sperm; occurs only in the testes. Specifically in the seminiferous tubules within the testes.

The epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, and prostate gland all support maturation and motility of sperm, not production. The testis is the only site of sperm production. Everything else matures, transports, or supports.
5. Hormonal Control of Reproduction
LH Surge Triggers Ovulation
Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from the ovarian follicle. This is triggered by a surge of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) from the anterior pituitary gland. [NDA 2007-I]
LH is the immediate trigger for ovulation. Not oestrogen alone. Not FSH. Not progesterone. The LH surge is what causes the follicle to rupture and release the egg.
Menstrual Cycle: Controlled by Two Glands
The menstrual cycle is jointly regulated by hormones from: [NDA 2025-I]
- Ovary: produces oestrogen and progesterone
- Pituitary gland: produces FSH and LH
Both glands work together to regulate the 28-day cycle. Lacrimal glands (tear glands) have no role in the menstrual cycle. Sebaceous glands (skin oil glands) have no role. The prostate is a male gland with no involvement.
6. Oral Contraceptive Pills
Oral contraceptive pills work by inhibiting the release of the egg (ovulation). [NDA 2022-I]
The synthetic hormones in the pill suppress the LH surge. Without an LH surge, the follicle does not rupture. No egg is released. Without an egg, fertilisation cannot occur.

7. Types of Reproduction
Reproduction is the process by which organisms produce offspring of their own species. Sex organs, male and female, are NOT mandatory for reproduction. Many organisms reproduce without any sex organs at all. [NDA 2010-II]

8. Embryo Without Fertilisation
Three processes can produce an embryo without fertilisation:

All three are valid irregular modes of embryo development without fertilisation.
9. Artificial Insemination
In artificial insemination, sperm only is introduced into the uterus of the female.
Not the egg alone. Not a fertilised egg. Not egg and sperm together. Only sperm is introduced. Fertilisation then occurs naturally inside the female reproductive tract.
Artificial insemination is different from IVF (in vitro fertilisation), where fertilisation occurs outside the body in a laboratory. In AI, fertilisation occurs inside the female body after sperm introduction.

11. Prenatal Development: Amnion and Ultrasound
The Amnion
The amnion is a thin membrane that encloses the developing embryo. It is filled with amniotic fluid, a watery cushion that protects the foetus from mechanical shock.
Ultrasound Scanning
Ultrasound scanning during pregnancy can detect the sex of the embryo by imaging the developing genitalia. Amnion contains amniotic fluid that cushions the foetus, and ultrasound can detect embryonic sex.
12. Colostrum: First Immunity for the Newborn
In the days immediately after childbirth, the mother produces colostrum, the first, specialised milk.
Colostrum is rich in maternal antibodies, particularly secretory IgA. It provides the newborn with passive immunity, protection from infection while the baby’s own immune system is still immature and developing.

Colostrum is NOT transitional milk and NOT regular breast milk. It is specifically the first secretion, the most antibody-rich of all. This distinction is directly tested.
13. Comparative Reproductive Biology
What do a parrot, a platypus, and a kangaroo have in common?
The answer is homothermy. They are all warm-blooded (endothermic) animals. They maintain a constant internal body temperature regardless of the external environment.
This surprises students because the platypus lays eggs, a typically reptilian trait. But the platypus is a mammal. It has fur, produces milk, and is warm-blooded. Egg-laying does not make it cold-blooded.
