Agriculture of India – NDA Geography Notes

Agriculture is the backbone of India’s economy. About half of India’s working population still depends on farming for their livelihood. India has the world’s largest cropped area, larger than China and the United States.
But Indian agriculture faces many challenges: small farm sizes, dependence on monsoon, degraded soils, and low productivity in dry regions. NDA tests this chapter through questions on crop seasons, major crops and their growing conditions, leading producing states, farming practices, and the Green Revolution.
Characteristics of Indian Agriculture
India has the world’s largest cropped area. The cropping pattern is dominated by cereals. The average farm holding is too small, which is a major structural problem. All three of these statements are correct.
Main reason for increase in agricultural production in recent decades: The best reason is use of improved agricultural methods and technologies: including high-yielding variety (HYV) seeds, fertilisers, pesticides, and irrigation. NOT simply an increase in area or conversion of barren land. [NDA 2011-I]
Main reason for low agricultural productivity in dry regions: Dependence on erratic monsoon. Dry regions get unreliable and insufficient rainfall, making crop production unstable. [NDA 2012-I]
Reasons for decrease in per capita land holdings: Rapid population growth (more people sharing the same land) and the practice of dividing land equally among heirs (each generation divides plots into smaller pieces). These two are the main drivers.
India is a major producer of fruits and vegetables because of variation in its agro-climatic conditions. Different temperatures, rainfall, soil, and altitudes across regions allow a huge variety of crops to grow. [NDA 2009-II]
Cropping intensity: The ratio of gross cropped area to net sown area. When this ratio is high, the same land is being cultivated multiple times in a year.
Dry land farming in India is largely confined to areas with annual rainfall less than 75 cm. [NDA 2020-I]
Land left fallow for more than five years is called Cultivable Wasteland. [NDA 2024-II]
Land use classification in India: The official categories are forestland, pastureland, barren and wasteland, current fallow, fallow other than current fallow, net sown area, and land under non-agricultural uses. Marginal land is NOT an official land use category.

Crop Seasons
India has three main crop seasons.
Kharif (Monsoon Crops) are sown in June-July at the beginning of the monsoon and harvested in October-November. They depend on the Southwest Monsoon. Examples: Rice, maize, jowar, bajra, cotton, jute, sugarcane, groundnut, soybean.
Rabi (Winter Crops) are sown in October-November after the monsoon and harvested in March-April. They depend on winter rains from Western Disturbances and stored soil moisture. Examples: Wheat, barley, mustard, peas, gram (chickpea).
Barley is a Rabi crop. [NDA 2019-II]
Wheat benefits from rain caused by Western Disturbances. [NDA 2023-II]
Zaid (Summer Crops) are grown between the Rabi and Kharif seasons (April to June), short-duration crops in the dry hot summer. Examples: Watermelon, cucumber, muskmelon, fodder crops.

Major Food Crops
Rice
Rice is a Kharif crop requiring high temperature (above 25°C), heavy rainfall (150–200 cm), and clayey soil with water retention capacity. Aus, Aman, and Boro are three different growing periods of rice in a year in eastern India.
Rice grows in lowlands and river deltas, along with jute and tea, in areas with 180–250 cm rainfall and high summer temperatures. [NDA 2012-I]
Leading producers: West Bengal (largest), UP, Punjab, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh.
Wheat
Wheat is a Rabi crop requiring cool weather during growth, warm dry weather during ripening, 50–75 cm rainfall, and well-drained loamy soil. It benefits from the winter rain brought by Western Disturbances. [NDA 2023-II]
Leading producers: UP (largest), Punjab, Haryana, MP, Rajasthan.
Millets (Jowar, Bajra, Ragi)
Millets are drought-resistant crops grown in dry, poor soil areas. Sorghum (Jowar) is categorised as a millet. Bajra grows well in sandy and shallow black soils, mainly in Rajasthan, UP, and Gujarat. Ragi is mainly cultivated in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in red and shallow black soil.
Pulses
High-protein crops important for vegetarian diets. Grown in dry conditions; they are nitrogen-fixing crops that improve soil fertility.
Leading producers: MP, Rajasthan, UP.
Major Cash Crops
Sugarcane
Sugarcane is a Kharif crop taking 10–12 months to mature. It needs a hot and humid climate, 75–150 cm rainfall, and deep, rich loamy soil. India is the world’s second largest producer of sugar (after Brazil). Leading states: UP (largest), Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu.
Peninsular sugar industry advantages include higher yield per hectare, higher sucrose content, and a longer crushing season. The statement “most Peninsular mills are along the east coast” is WRONG. They are mainly in the interior.
Cotton
Cotton is a Kharif crop needing high temperature (25°C+), moderate to light rainfall, at least 100 frost-free days, and deep black cotton soil. India has the world’s largest cultivated area under cotton. Leading states: Gujarat (largest), Maharashtra, Telangana, MP, Rajasthan.
The cotton industry suffered after Independence because most cotton mills had gone to West Pakistan. India retained the cotton growing areas but lost the mills. [NDA 2008-II]
Gossypium species cultivated in India: G. arboreum, G. herbaceum, G. hirsutum, and G. barbadense: all four are species of cotton.
Jute
Jute is a Kharif crop needing hot and humid climate, 150–200 cm rainfall, well-drained loamy soil, and flat alluvial plains. Leading states: West Bengal (largest, about 80%), Bihar, Assam, Odisha.
West Bengal produces about 80% of India’s jute, NOT Assam. The statement “Assam produces nearly 80% of jute” is WRONG. [NDA 2013-II]
Jute is NOT significantly cultivated in Andhra Pradesh. Jute is commonly cultivated with rice in rotation, NOT wheat. [NDA 2013-II]
Tea
Tea needs a tropical and subtropical climate, heavy rainfall of 150–250 cm, and well-drained acidic soil. Tea soil should NOT contain lime. Lime reduces acidity and harms tea plants. [NDA 2018-I]
Tea is cultivated in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu. [NDA 2007-II]
Leading states: Assam (largest producer), West Bengal (Darjeeling), Tamil Nadu (Nilgiris).
Coffee
Coffee needs a warm and moist climate with a dry spell during ripening, rolling fields with good drainage. Temperatures above 35°C are NOT required. They are actually harmful for coffee. Coffee prefers moderate temperatures between 15 and 28°C. [NDA 2017-I]
Leading state: Karnataka (largest producer: Coorg, Chikkamagaluru). Varieties: Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica.
Rubber
Rubber needs a tropical climate, hot and humid, with more than 200 cm rainfall and well-drained laterite soil. Kerala is the largest producer of natural rubber in India: [NDA 2015-I]
Tobacco
Leading states: Andhra Pradesh (largest), Gujarat, Karnataka.
Other Important Crops
Black Pepper: India’s most important spice; largest producer: Kerala.
Coconut: Lakshadweep has the highest productivity per hectare and the highest oil content in nuts in the world.
Golden Rice: A genetically modified crop that produces Vitamin A (beta-carotene). [NDA 2017-II]
Rajasthan is NOT prominent for plantation agriculture: plantation crops like tea, coffee, and rubber require humid tropical conditions. Rajasthan is arid and unsuitable.

Agriculture Practices
Shifting Cultivation (Jhum Cultivation)
Practised mainly in Northeast India. Also called slash-and-burn farming: a patch of forest is cleared, crops are grown for 2–3 years, then the land is abandoned when soil fertility is exhausted. After many years, the farmer returns to the same patch. It is an example of subsistence farming.
Known by different names in different regions: Jhum (Northeast India), Milpa (Central America), Ladang (Southeast Asia). All three statements commonly tested are correct: practised in NE India, also called slash-and-burn, and soil fertility is exhausted in a few years.
Mixed Farming
Growing several crops AND also rearing animals on the same farm. The rearing of animals is what distinguishes mixed farming from simply growing multiple crops. Animal waste provides manure; crop residues feed animals.
Inter-cropping
Growing two or more crops in definite row patterns on the same piece of land at the same time. This is different from mixed cropping, which is a random mixture of crops.
Plantation Farming
Single crop grown on large estates; mostly in humid tropics. Statement I: Plantation farming has mostly been practised in humid tropics. TRUE. Statement II: The soil of humid tropics is highly fertile. FALSE (humid tropical soils are often laterite and poor in fertility due to leaching). So Statement I is true but Statement II is false. Intensive Subsistence Agriculture
Practised in India, Japan, Indonesia, and much of Asia. NOT predominantly practised in Canada. Canada uses large-scale commercial mechanised farming. [NDA 2021-I]
Commercial Grain Farming (Middle Latitude Grasslands)
Characterised by large farm sizes, highly mechanised operations, and extensive farming. All three are correct characteristics. [NDA 2011-II]

Coral Reefs in India
The four major coral reef areas of India: Gulf of Kachchh (Gujarat), Gulf of Mannar (Tamil Nadu), Lakshadweep Islands, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. All four are correct. [NDA 2017-I]
Coral reefs are NOT found in the Gulf of Cambay (Gulf of Khambhat). The Gulf of Cambay has very turbid, muddy water with strong tidal currents from the Narmada and Tapti rivers. These conditions are hostile to coral growth.
Largest area under coral reefs in India: Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
